Does size matter?

20/07/07

How often do words longer than 9 or 10 letters come along in tournaments? Not often I suspect, due to the way we play 'to win' as it were, though they can be a natural part of the game for those with the knowledge. However, when they do they appear they are a bit sensational, even to most of us who play tournaments on a fairly regular basis.

A Div 2 game, 2005 US NSC achieved such a height, Rita Norr played ‘mATERIAL’, and in one go, Andrew Golding, her opponent placed ‘RE’ before and ‘IZE’ after making ‘REmATERIALIZE’ a whopping 13 letter stunner. Did it end there? Certainly not, Ms Norr later added a D to make REmATERIALIZED – WOW 14 Letters. Scores not mentioned here… we are talking aesthetics now.

Not to be outdone on this side of the pond, on 15th July 2007, Gorse Hill, David Shenkin constructed a similar feat, with ‘GRAPH’ on the board he added ‘BIO’ and ‘iZED', making ‘BIOGRAPHiZED’ – OK, ‘only’ 12 letters but still gets a WOW.

Has it ended yet? Certainly not. Further research has shown, a certain Mr Bob Violet doing this in 1985 in a London League match in Buckinghamshire. Bob's opponent started with 'FRA', Bob challenged (as it turns out probably as well it was good), but added 'NC(H)ISES', his earlier move of '(L)ACINESS' was challenged off, he then spent 5 or 6 goes trying to collect DISEN, which he evntually did.. 'DISENFRANC(H)ISES' - WOWEEE a 15 letter stunner.

UK OPEN 2008 - in the long word vein Nigel Richards' HYPE(REALISMS) (12) and Anne Ramseys' RELINQU(ISH) (10) are a very worthy mention, and, Jake Jacobs' (EX)IGEANTE (9) ... still waiting for another match to Bob Violets 15 word stunner, DISENFRANCHISES (15).
